The Challenges James Schweder, the Vice President of Technology at Kalmbach Publishing Co. was frustrated by how the technological limitations of their current DVD series prevented them from keeping their Model Railroader archive up to date as new issues were published. To keep up with reader demand, they considered releasing a new set of DVDs, but were deterred by not only the long-term cost of continuing to maintain an outdated model but also the lack of user engagement possible with a static DVD series. “People wanted to connect with the magazine, find articles they liked and print them or read them when they’re not connected to the internet; they wanted to read them on their iPad or iPhone, and we couldn’t do that with DVDs at all,” says Schweder. The team instead turned their interest towards a digital archive, but they did not have the toolset to create and maintain this in-house. When the opportunity came to evaluate other digital publishing providers, Schweder jumped on it. Their current DVD solution presented many problems Relied on obsolete technology Too expensive to keep up to date Lack of user engagement No offline functionality
